Well, what i thought might be just a simple thermostat fix, has turned out to be a blown head gasket I suspect.

Symptoms are:
It overheated on a 5 mile drive, first time I'd used the van for a while.
Now it won't start, it just gets spluttery but, it builds pressure in the radiator tank.

So I'm guessing this is going to be an expensive repair. :-(

Sounds like the head gasket has blown.

Strip & fit new Payen gaskets, water pump, core plugs, thermostat & cam belt including fluids & labour. £300.00.

That's a fair bit less than I expected - I can afford that. Worth going to someone like you or just my local trusted garage? Aware that Rascals will be a rare sight for them?

cheers

Why core plugs Dell?

Because, in my experience, if the head gasket has failed the core plugs will fail as well in the not to distant future.

There are several things that have to be done correctly or the problem will recurr. You may also need a new radiator. £140.00 fitted. I have had a lot of recently replaced head gaskets fitted by others that fail or reports back from the garages to the customer that the engine is beyond repair. They are not.

Thanks Dell.

So in other words alex - if you can get it to Dell - it's a no brainier.

He's cheaper than anyone else, and far superior.

I dont think it's that mechanics arent up to it, i think it's that they can't be bothered.

Sounds like it could be the best plan.

Derek, if I can get the van to you, when would you have an opening in your diary for it, and what kind of turnaround time would you be looking at?

I'm only in Sussex; hopefully I can find a mate with a decent tow car/trailer to get it to you when the time comes.

Hello Alex,

Fifth of December. If you drop it off at 08:30 & lose yourself for 5 or 6 hours you can collect it & drive it home that night. I am close to Bluewater. Is it an ordinary van? What year?

A good cheap recovery firm is A.R.M.

Thanks Derek

Work commitments would mean I'd have to get the van to you either via recovery truck/trailer or somehow over a weekend, and then pick it up as I haven't got any days off left this year, as appealing as the same day collection is (though I may be able to come and get it the same evening after work if I tie it in with seeing the mother in law!)

It is a standard 1990 year van, yes.

Let me get some quotes for delivery etc if that's alright and I'll come back to you

Hi Derek;

If I was able to get the van to you next week, have you got some space to have it parked for a few days until you have the time to fix it?

A mate with a trailer can do the journey for beer money and save me £150 transport costs.

Hi Derek,

Sorry I've been out of touch for a while. The festive season has been and gone, my van remains on my driveway unmoved and unrepaired, but thankfully also the expenses of Christmas have moved on.

If I can work out the best means to get it to you in Dartford, would you still be able to carry out the repair work? If yes, I'd likely need to have the car collected from me and delivered to you as I have nothing with a towbar to use. Could you let me know some provisional dates, and, is it OK to have the van left with you for a few days if necessary depending on drop off/pickup availability?

Naturally, when it comes to picking the van up from you, I'll pay cash.

Cheers

Currently got work filling my yard. Just took a  head job on today.

You can book it in for 6 weeks time if you want & I will put you in the diary for that date.

Regards, Derek.
