Similar story here, last March had the ignition do random cutting out and the newish exhaust re-shaped, lol Smiley

I haven't done this on the Bambi, but  on other old vehicles you just short the wire at the sender unit to earth, turn ignition on (not starting engine) if the gauge moves to full/hot then the sender is at fault. If the gauge doesn't move then it's the gauge or the wiring. (single wire Yellow/white, see bottom left in pic).
