Hi all, quick question? Ive got 155 R12 76T tyres on my van and have been making enquirys into cost of replacements from local companys! Most of the larger companys have all sucked through their teeth over the phone and said Ni on impossible to get hold of such tyres nowadays and if they can will be £50-£60 a go!! Anyone else had this problem? and where did you get yr boots from? Cheers Andy

Hi and Ouch! that seem a little expensive but handy to know. I did find one tyre on a web site for £12.50, it was brand new old stock they were getting rid of. Then of course you have to pay the dreaded VAT n postage, my rears are ok for the min but the fronts are showing signs of the tracking needing some adjustment. I do Have Robs old Alloys sitting pretty in the shed with loads of tread on the tyres, but am awaiting finances to purchase the longer bolts etc. Be interested to know how much you can get them for JJ Cheers matey

looking back at notes i have, i have rascal tyres at 155/55/12, but i might be wrong Some of you wil know this already, but just incase
What i learnt whilst i owned my van is that there are 2 types of tyre, car and comercial.
a car tyre has 4 measurements 155/80/12 81T. 155 = tyre width in mm 80 = % of 155 as tyre wall (known as aspect ration) 12 = obviously diameter of wheel in inches 81T = load and speed rating
a van doesnt have an aspect ratio, and the load rating is usually higher as you carry heavy loads in vans/trailers
when i had my van, i had car tyres fitted, as i very rarely carried the rascas 500kg+ load. as a rascal weighs a bit more than a feather, you dont really need commercial tyres
commercial tyres can be more expensive. to get cheaper tyres, you can have slightly wider tyres, lets say 165 or 175, and then reduce the aspect ratio by 5 or 10 to keep the same rolling radius

the full load capacity of the van and pick up are both around 500kg ...most normal car tyres are around 300/400 kg and thats multiplyed by 4 so in my way of looking at it ...any tyre will just about do the job ...i dont see a problem...

yes, your right chop. however, it is weight on the axle, but thats not a massive difference. We all know that some of us have been cheeky in the past and put more than 500kg in the back that is when you may need to be careful which tyres you have

For insurance purposes you really ought to be using commercial type tyres - definitely so if the van is used for any kind of business

Its nothing to do with whether the tyres are suitable or not - its to to with insurance companies being naughty! A Rascarry is a commercial vehicle - and a commercial vehicle fitted with car tyres will be just another get out clause for insurance companies having an excuse not to pay out in the event of a claim.

Maybe it ain't for me to say, and yes some forums are more funny about the 'F' word let alone anything else..
I suggest that we don't use it on here.
I ain't no prude, but if there has to be one, there's a time & a place for it, and it ain't on here.
There, I've said it, if we want to harp on about it, find another thread or I'll request grandfather rights to omit postings.

on my log book its registered as a private light goods PLG...and when i took out my insurance i had to state that it wasnt going to be used for any commecial uses..just for personal and domestic use...so maybe it all depends if you are going to use it for commercial use then you should check with your own individual insurer... ??
