Dont think the insurance side will be a problem, if you stiffen the chasis. Helps if you have related qualifications in engineering and you have coded welders. I will be taken pics of all welds and progress as i go on too, then i will have a good case when i get it looked at etc..

So now im looking for a 2lt pinto and gearbox.......so if anyone ses an old sierra, granada etc.... leave me a message Smiley ta!

im going the other way with my rasc i bought a mot failed suzuki cappuccino 660 turbo '' a smaller motor '' but a fair bit more tunable alot quicker ill be using the front and rear subframes from the car which should sort the handling  and because the car is about 150mm wider across the wheels , fingers crossed should make my rascaccino a tad more stable, i will post some pics of the build as it progresses

Big engine for straight line speed OK but I have to say since I got Rob Morgans rims on my van it drives like a go-kart absolutely not uinstable. The tracks 4" wider front and back and all the weights down low ... I think the small engine +turbo is a neat fix less detectable as well.

This could get interesting.

the 3 cyl turbo motor is capable of 120 mph apparently,, to achieve this the restrictor must be removed from the ecu,

I love these threads!
120mph in a rascal would be VERY hard to obtain, due to its brick-like aerodynamics
i would not be at all worried about handling issues with wider wheels/tyres, as mike said.

i would not bother with a pinto engine, as they are big and heavy, and only offer 100bhp from a 2ltr, which will be sluggish.
i'd go for a 1.4/1.6 engine.
i did know which rear axle to use. i'd have a guess at a cortina?
mx-5 engine and drivetrain may be a good starting point. short wheelbase japanese 1.8 130bhp and rear wheel drive. or 1.6 with 115bhp. it wont be cheap, as they are used for kit car donors

Wink only on a test track and in controlled conditions ,, joking aside i would of thought that with a bit of tunning , cos these little jap cars have lots of potential, that it should give these bike engined rascals a run for their money the bike engines dont seem to have the gearing right, time will tell  Grin

Im liking the replies i have had since the start of my first post lol

Maybes a great start to something most have in mind. Whats wrong with the crossflow engine? 1.6 can be bored out and is easily tunable and very rebust.

Hmm. Nobody's mentioned uprating the brakes, yet  Grin

I like the idea of a hayabusa turbo lump, with electric reverse, but you'd probably need to arrange your own funeral, PDQ
Honestly, I think the Yamaha R1 lump might be worth looking at. Some kit-car Minis use these, so I would guess that all the bits and pieces are already there, and just need modification (probably a lot of!)

I have been looking into this myself and i reckon the Rover k-Series.
It's lightweight, tunable, same size phisically from 1.1 to 1.8vvc and very cheap.
There are loads around even comlpete cars. I would like to mate to original G/Box and am going to look at a Plate / Adaptor to mate them up.  (failing that I could use type 9 box with an off the shelf bellhousing. These are used in caterhams and moggies.)
It's all in  the planning stage at the moment, but i have bought a Rover 100 to start measuring up.
The reason I want to do this is because I Love  Grin Rascals but want a little more power and economy for longer journeys.

GOOD luck...but the k-series engine is a bad choice unless you enjoy changing head gaskets....1.1 8 valve ..is the only one i would go for...but it still eventually overheats and blows head gaskets...
