Well I don't really know what happened.... just went out to star my wee van, and it just would noot have any of it.
I rang jj and he swished over from work to have a klook to see if the points had moved... they hadn't but after he had a fiddle, it started ok.
I did manage to get it to bite once before he came out, but it just backfired and stalled.
Does anyone know why this would be???
I am thinking about electric ignition... I know jj has this on his van, but does anyone else??
Thanks jj for coming out to help... again....
I am sorry to be such a pain.

Hello Jen, it`s possible you "flooded" the engine with petrol. If the van does not start by the 3rd try, push the choke in & press the throttle pedal to the floor & turn the key until [hopefully] the engine fires. As soon as it does pull the choke out immediately to keep it going then carry on as usual. Derek.

Hi Derek.... I don't think I did that... there was no smell of fuel... I have just gone up to Asda.... the journey there was a mare... I am sat on a cushion anyway..(hurt my coccyx bouncing down the stairs on Sunday night... gonna change my moniker to Jinxy..)
The van started, but then stalled again on the way, then again, and again. When I brake at lights, roundabouts or behind a "slow Norris" , then try to accelerate again, it's lumpy, jumpy then stalls.... I really don't know what to try next.
I am hoping to try the electric ignition that some people have, but if it's not that... I don't know what to consider next...
Any ideas??

It definately sounds like an ignition problem, but undoubtedly JJ will have set it up correctly.
Condensor or coil? or even dirt in the fuel??
Some say that with electronic ignition a different coil is needed, but mine runs OK with standard coil, it still hates the wet though and I haven't totally sussed that yet.

Spark and fuel thats what you need to make an engine run so I would try a few other things Jenxy.

On the odd occasions when you have got it running check to see if you have any arcing on the HT leads from the coil to the distributor or any of the HT leads to the plugs. You will see a bright spark going to earth if this is the problem. On these old vans the insulation breaks down on the leads, miosture gets in and the 30,000 volts just tracks along the moisture to earth so you get little or no spark. Solution is WD40 (Temporary fix) or new leads/distributor cap.

Fuel.. well if you can't smell anything after trying to start with the choke out then I agree with everyone else check your tank, filters and pump. If the problem isn't one of these then its got to be something happening in the carburetter. I had a problem with mine when it just kept stalling, the previous owner had the idle speed screw wound up so it was revving its balls off and couldn't stop !! but it was only because the slow running jet was dirty. In the end it was getting the ballance right between the slow running jet adjustment and the idle speed setting.. just have a play with your screwdriver. While your at it is the float sticking in the float chamber ?? If I were you I would whip the carb off and just clean it.. if you get this far without a solution..

So.. you must be local if JJ is helping you out.. How about the three of us meeting... the last rally was fantastic (ehh jj ??!!)

Hello Jen, Do NOT spray WD40 on the electrics. It is Hydroscopic, i.e. it actually attracts water. It is sold as a water dispersant not a waterproofer. Use any silicon based spray to protect your electrics against damp. I think your problem is a partially blocked slow running/idle jet. These "fur" up over time & then don`t pass the correct amount of fuel. Derek.

Hi jen ...sounds like your having a wild time with the van...not got much more to add to what has already been said ..(leads coil...try removing air filter) for what its worth mine played up the other day it was chucking it down too..on the starter motor there is a small wire that connects to it ..a spade connector with a plastic shroud .this had worked loose and got water in it .. just cleaned it up with a bit of sandpaper and tightend it  by squeezing it with a pair of pliers.."SORTED"....its a process of elimination hope you get it sorted....with all the rain we have had its more than likley to be electrical fault so concentrate on the exposed bits coil leads ..dizzy ..check plugs.....good luck pet..

Hello Jen, If your problem persists can you get it up to me at Dartford. I could then chop & change bits. The starter motor wire causes these symptoms too so check that. Derek.

Spose I could always get meself a donkey... push out the windscreen and get it to clippety clop me up the road Grin
Went out on another little shop run today, bit lumpy but not quite as bad... didn't stall anyway... so that has to be an improvement.
If there is muck in the fuel tank, I really don't know what the solution to that is.... I have heard it's a pig of a task to take it off and sloosh it out... so maybe that would be the very last resort.... I thought you could get an additive to sling in the tank to keep the debris down.... but maybe I dreamed that... maybe I am thinking of the gunk you put in radiators to plug up the leaks. Huh
