You turn the egine forward which takes up any slack in the belt & set the distributor/points. Then you start the engine & the slack is pulled out of the belt & you set the distributor to give 8 degrees before T.D.C. still with the slack pulled out of the belt by the forward motion of the timing train  as the engine runs. I have had vans in with timing set at 22 degrees before T.D.C. that still ran reasonably well so I cannot subscribe to your theory. Derek.

well if you think of it, if the belt is slack the TDC of the piston will happen before the TDC of the cam, this puts the cam timing and the dizzy timing out of sync of the crank shaft, so say for instance the crank shaft passes over tdc, then about 10 degrees later the camshaft would pull through camshaft tdc( keep in mind 10 degrees late between the cam and the crank is not alot of movement ) but it is correct in thoery, and.. it definatly has proven correct on my van, as now it doesnt hesitate at all, the revving is alot free'er, and there is alot more power, and.. above all i cannot hear the engine at idle anymore, infact i rev it just to make sure its still running sometimes.. coz its also not idleing rough.. just as smooth as a new one

i like the theory...the belt could have stretched or it could have jumped 1 or 2 teeth...this would alter the valve timing ...and if it worked for you then "it worked"
it is another addition to the never-ending list of remodies...and this is what this forum is all about....ideas and theorys.....trial and error...

hmm i somehow doubt my own theory though, i guess though my theory is correct, IF the belt was loose enough that the teeth dont seat properly in the pullys, but in other ways is wrong ( unless the belt stretches ) simply because the belt does have teeth and in theory would keep the timing exact, i dunno.. im waay too tired by the time i get back to these forums to think straight

When the crankshaft turns all slack is pulled out of the belt & all parts driven by the belt are in the correct relationship to each other IF correctly set. Derek.

Over the last week I managed to get 27.29 MPG out of mine, which I was pretty pleased with.

[in-case anyone hasn't noticed mine is an Ice Cream Van]

Though I haven't really been out 'dinging' round the streets, so it is mainly driving up and down the A3.

I just drove 2250 miles up to and around the Scottish highlands in my Rascal camper and spent just shy of £300.  I make that about 33 MPG which is pretty dam good.  One hell of a road trip Smiley

Hello Ben, pushing that skyscraper of yours through the air & up & down the hills on the A.3. I wouldn`t expect much better. Derek.
