So I've been diagnosed with a "porous" sump - it's rusting through
Obviously I'll need to get another sump, and gasket, but does anyone have any advice/tips?
Should I paint/underseal the new sump to protect it?

Hi Robin,
blimey, that sounds an unusual event.
It might be a good idea for us all to check ours!!
You won't do any harm if you get another and give it copious amounts of paint/underseal/stonechip even.

I have come across three or four over the years. Definitely worth painting with Hammerite or similar. One porous sump was caused by the engine mounting cross member having been bent up so it touched the sump & rubbed a hole in it. I can supply a sump & gasket but it is an engine out job to change it. Alternatively you could try sealing the hole insitu with a plastic metal repair kit.

I had the same happen to me a few years ago. Taking it off and filling it with Chemical Metal solved it for a while but the leak came back. Replaced it with a sump from a scrapper in the end. I would take it off and seal it although you need to be scrupulous in cleaning it. It should seal for a while but I'd be ultimately keeping an eye out for a replacement second hand sump.

Think I've got this - defo got a leak from the sump area. Think it'll have to wait until spring to drop the oil and clean it up and see...

Generally most sump leaks come from the sump plug not sealing. Carefully clean around it with petrol or spirit. When it is thoroughly clean, dust around the sump plug with talcum powder & see if the talc gets oily.

Thanks all.
Will have a closer look underneath tomorrow. Will be carefull - I don't want to poke it and find the rust was holding all the oil in...
Apparently it's a common problem on Fiats - sure enough when I googled it I ended up on some Fiat forums. Several posters said that repairs don't last for long. Also read several stories of people discovering someone had painted the *inside* of the sump after a repair. I won't be doing that.

I had this very same issue on my van. When my old man helped out removing a whole load of rust from the underside one year before hammer-iting it we found that the sump had quite a lot of very small holes in it once the rust had been removed. Mixture of hard sealant/exhaust weld & hammerite and jobs a good un
