The horn was not working and my steering wheel needed re-aligning on the spline, so removed the indicator stalk and ignition barrel plastic cover. Removed the wheel with a pulling clamp (that was fun.....not).
Took the wheel to the work bench, removed the two circuit prongs, cleaned them up. Removed the contact plate on the bottom of the wheel, cleaned that up. re-assembled. Before popping it back on the steering column i noticed that the copper prong that is attached to the indicator stalk, which is meant to be touching the contact plate was snapped in half so did not have enough length to reach the contact plate. The earth wire had disintegrated, so before trying to fix it i took some pics and put them on here so i could gain some expert advice first.
first ones shows the indicator stalk with half a copper prong on the bottom left with a small blue wire coming from it.
second shows the reverse of the wheel with a small black wire which was the earth wire.

Common problem is the copper breaks. I've got a separate switch on the dash.

I'd agree that losing the horn is quite a common problem at our age (!!). On my last Rascal I just fitted a push switch cable tied to the dash. Sometimes in damp weather it would stick and when I pipped the horn it wouldn't go off and I'd be frantically fumbling around to pull out an in-line fuse I'd put in the circuit. So no horn or too much horn - there was no happy medium!

The thing I found with mine is that at the bottom of the steering tube, and on top of the steering box is a flexable rubber univesal joint, and it has a wire that jumps from one bolt to another to make continuity with the earth system in the rest of the van, mine rotted so no horn, wired it up again and presto

It is usually lack of earth continuity at the flexible joint. We add a ring connected to a separate earth lead at this point. Often the terminals corrode off the horn as well or the horn rusts up. A couple of wacks on the horn whilst operating the horn push usually sorts that.

On my Rascal, the actual horn was poorly earthed at the horn end itself. I bought a new Klaxton horn and rewired it and it definately was LOUD!
