seems a strange place to have a heater with, presumably, a flexible gas hose feeding it  Huh

It's the water heater by the sound of it. I think they were an optional extra, but exceedingly rare though I'd imagine. I'm about 95% sure it would run off gas, however they igniter would be electric.

Otherwise some vans have the Propex 1600 C option fitted, can usually tell by seeing the thermostat or the 'bell' on the outside. The standard position for the thermostat is at the end of the left bunk facing forward. It's an excellent heater warms the place up in no time. If you've got one of these fitted it's quite a blessing I must say. Otherwise from what I've heard the fridge provides some warmth when it's running on gas. Not sure it's adequate warmth, or just enough to stave off hypo. I'd imagine the latter.

Pack a warm sweater, I can also suggest an excellent sleeping bag otherwise that keeps one warm down to -20 c.

Thanks for the intrest in my heater there are no other pipes apart from the gas. The unit is fixed to the door under the sink its about a foot square with a control on the right hand side where you turn on the gas when pressed in and turn a bit more to ignite the gas, you can see the heater flame in the front of the unit which looks as it is glowing in the front of the heater and gets very warm. I forgot to say you have to have the door open when in use.

I always found the heat from the fridge operating kept the Bambi nice & warm & I always kept the skylight open at night.

We go away all year in the Romahome.  Sometimes we use a little fan heater with a thermostat.  But most of the time we just stick the gas rings on for a couple of minutes to warm it up and then it stays pretty comfy then.

Now found all about my heater after going through a lot of paper work i had with the van. Its a Rondo Developments Catalytic Heater i have the instruction book and the guarantee. From what i can make out it dates back to around 1988 as i have a letter from the manufacture when the first owner ordered a new control knob for it. Problem solved
