Well amazingly the battery that I ordered yesterday afternoon was on my doorstep before 9am this morning.  With the help of my trusty Haines manual I took the old one out and fitted the new one and she started instantly.  I will get the alternator checked as suggested above and ask my mechanic friend to give it a service when he's back from his hols. 

I can recommend that eBay seller for speediness.
