A few times recently my van has struggled to start. It's generally ok from a cold start, the problem is if i have recently turned the engine off, making trips to the garage to refuel a bit of a gauntlet run.

  • The battery seems ok.
  • I can hear the fuel pump clicking away.
  • The starter motor turns over.

It's just it really takes some turning over to start.

Any ideas what it could be?

Hi Derek, i hope you are well Smiley

Generally speaking i open the choke and do put my foot to the floor, which gets it going. I was just concerned that i might flood the engine or something or do the battery by constantly trying the starter.

Sounds like you are flooding the engine with petrol when it is partially warm.
Dont use any choke until the engine fires & when it does just use as much choke as is necessary to keep it running.
If it doesn`t fire after three or four goes put the pedal to the floor as you turn it over until it fires.
You are doing this to get rid of excess fuel.

Yes, I`m fine & very busy with Rascarry work.

Cheers,
Derek.

I'm not sure that a Rascal should need any choke to start once the engine is slightly warm.
My van only seems to need full choke for a cold start. After that, it's quite happy to start with a little bit of throttle and no choke at all.
