Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone might have any hints about my clutch. It sometimes squeels in some gears, and did so today particularly when I went down and released into forth. It continually squeeled loudly, but no loss of power though. I got out of the gear quickly just as a precaution.

Went back into forth later and no problem, this problem seems intermittent. Hope it's not new clutch time, shes only done 32k. Syncromesh problem maybe?

Thoughts?
Cheers!

Could be worn down to rivets like Chop said, could also be some contamination of the lining with being left for a long time.  If it's the latter it should clear up in a couple of days of round town driving.  What was it like when you drove back from Scotland, did you get any squeaking then or is it just since being laid up?

ps: If the clutch has gone, they are relatively inexpensive and easy to change.  Not much consolation, I know, given the hassle you've had already.

Hi Duncan. I do hope it does clears up as suggested, but I noticed this problem about a fortnight ago, interestingly it went away. Yesterday I did a 40 mile round trip, and it really started to squeek just after some traffic lights on the last leg of the return trip.

As far as I can remember I don't think I heard any problems last year last returning from scotland. I'll see how things go, but when clutches die do they die in dramatic fashion? I'm just wondering if I should check it out now as a precaution, or continue driving until I can be certain that there deffinately is a problem. I just wouldnt want to be stuck on the side of the road!

Atleast the gearbox is fine afaik, no slipping or unhealthy sounds in gear!

Thanks all!

ayup slowcoach. it could be the thrust bearing or spigot shaft bearing in the centre of the flywheel. heres another one for you had a friend once said his clutch was  squeeky turned out to be a slack fan belt  Lips sealed noah

Is the squeak as the pedal comes up to re-engage the clutch or for the duration the pedal is down? If the latter then spigot bearing or release bearing are suspects. If its just at engagement then lining or flywheel more likely.

I think its a slack fanbelt. Keep it simple & check that first for condition & degree of slack.
15 m.m. slack is about right.

Thanks all - yes I think it was the drive belt, it seemed quite loose I could push or pull it about an inch in either direction.

I loosened the alternator bolt and gave it a good tug forward with a hammer before bolting up. Belt much tighter now, still flexs just slightly when pressed or pulled, hope it's not too tight!

Anyway fingers crossed no more squeels.
