Buzzing fuel pump

Hi all,

Finally got the insurance on Bambi and took a test drive. Arrived at the shops,shopped, got back in, turned the ignition on and noticed the fuel pump is now buzzing quite intensively. Normally it just ticks, perhaps there is a valve problem that needs looking at.

Gave Bambi a rest, fired her up again and it's clicking normally again now.

Anyway, I was wondering if Bambi is still drivable. I've got to make a 40 mile round trip tomorrow and wonder if it's best calling it off until I can figure this one out.

My van does this sometimes, but still works fine, seems to happen when low on petrol.

Dont worry. Its probably the carb float needle sticking open due to lack of use & so the pump is pushing fuel through the carb float chamber up the overflow
 return pipe back into the petrol tank.

i can hear a very slight air sound around my carb, i can't pinpoint an air leak, could the noise be the fuel jet hitting the inside of the piping? I'm trying to find an air leak as my fuel pump is going a little too fast

the air leak will more likley be....between tank and pump..the pump could be dragging air in

150 ticks a minute, you think i might need a new pump? had a good look with some water to detect leaks but found none

Thought I'd add to this thread rather than start a new one.  My bambi wouldn't start yesterday morning.  I tried several times, assumed I'd flooded it and got on the bus instead  .   

I thought by the time I got home again all would be fine, but it wouldn't start in the afternoon either.  The fuel pump was working yesterday morning, but was silent in the afternoon - has it died?  I gave the distributor cap a good squirt of wd40 inside and out, but I don't think that was the problem  it's just one of the few things I know how to do!

Hopefully when I try this morning Bambi will have self-healed overnight  but if not, any ideas?

If the pump is totally silent, it could be the pump, or just dirty connections.
If you are getting 12 volts at the pump, try giving it a whack, this should get it going again, if this works, it would be a good idea to dismantle the pump & clean the contacts, they are like points, good luck!

I did a fuel pump test on my van today.

The reason for this is because of late my pumps been intermittant. However i found out why when i looked at the fuel filter and realised i was a numpty and put it the wrong way around so flow was restricted.

Once pointing in the right direction i connected up a pressure gauge.

I was getting 3 PSI 0.2 bar. Its bugger all but thats what they run at. And according to haynes 500Ml a minute. So good way of testing flow is..... drink a bottle of coke, remove fuel pipe and stick in empty bottle, ign on and a stopwatch.

Well I went out this morning and followed Del Boy's cold start instructions from elsewhere on the forum and Bambi started instantly.  So fingers crossed there's nothing wrong other than my amateurish early morning fumblings with the choke and accelerator pedal.  I've had diesels for so long now I'm out of practice!
