Hey guys, only just joined so hello Smiley

So i basically feel i need a little more oomph from the Rascal and i was wondering if anyone knew where to start with which engines match and what could possibly be adapted to fit.

My initial thoughts were the 1.3 Suzuki carry engines, the main attraction being that i need to stick with cable operated gearboxes which hopefully is what most of these bedford/vauxall/suzuki/dihatsu vans use.

So yea i don't know a great deal about the history of engines and what possible conversions are out there so basically HELP! lol

Cheers,
Sam.

Hello & welcome to the site. As far as I am aware no other engine fits in with ease. If you get your engine running as well as they should they will do 80 m.p.h. which is frightening in a Rascarry. Sooo, sort your engine/carb/ignition out. Derek.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

The engine fitting isn't really a problem as this isn't a road van, because i have plenty of space upwards where the seats would usually be this shouldn't be an issue.

This is an ongoing project i started a year ago and it has been successful so far but it does lack power in it's current form and what i am using it for.

Speed is not my aim here, it never goes above 30, what i want is power down low, more torque and more acceleration.

Whatever i use to convert needs a cable operated gearbox ideally.

Here are some pictures to give you an idea of what im working on and that im not scared of a challenge  Grin Cheesy

Yea, i really need something that will sort of fit if you like, and the cable operated gearbox is what i need to stick with.

Someone suggested a 1.3 16 valve GTI Suzuki swift engine but i don't know.

That would be ideal actually because valvers like to rev high.

There seems to be plenty of grip, the tyres on the back are spikey autograss/mud racing tyres so no worries there, and with the welded differential there's always drive to both wheels.

we where going to go down the wheel spacers route near the beginning of the project, but given the abuse they would be getting we didn't want the hassle with wheel bearings being warn quickly.

The only thing that's letting it down is the small engine

indeed, this could be the one then, Isuzu engine so probably quite reliable?

Although being a 1.8 i should imagine this is a large engine, but would make a massive difference if i could make it fit!

Thanks for that, i will look further into it.

Sam.

if acceleration is what you want, you need to shed weight around the wheels to reduce unsprung mass

get some narrow tyres on the front, as they are doing bugger all anyway apart from turning, and i bet you back wheels control your turning anyway, lol

i would go for smaller wheels and/or lower profile tyres, if you only intend to hit 30mph, as they would be lighter, and spin up quicker

can the ratios in the box be changed for gears more suited to off road? can it be changed for a 4 speed?

just to throw a stupid idea in, how much spare cash do you have?
a bike engine would be good?
or a supercharged 1.0L rascal?
