Lets get a grip here.
I have spent a very large chunk of the past 40 years riding motor cycles around London including two stints as a despatch rider.
I used to come home each night with a filthy face & coughing my guts up from the filth buses, lorries & black cabs pumped out. Sometimes stuck behind a filth mobile I would come close to passing out from the fumes.
Now the air is soooo much cleaner & Central London far less congested & what caused this great improvement? Sensible legislation did it. Remember, several million people had to live & work amongst that filth & pollution.
I have a 1988 Bedford Midi as my work van but I live one mile inside the London low emission zone so from January next year I cannot bring it home to my house unless I pay a fee of £100.00 for the day. I am happy to go along with this law for the benefit it brings to us all. I wont bring the van home. Inconvenient, yes, but not the end of the world.
I have five pre 1972 vehicles that benefit from free Historic tax.
If it is rolled forward to 25 years the powers that be will rightly get concerned with the pollution & bring in legislation which is in force in other countries where you can only drive your historic vehicle to approved events & return to home.
Who wants to only have the use of your Rascarry a few times a year for the benefit of not having to tax it.
Come on ,put your hands up.
MMMM!!! not a single hand up.

What I say is dont rock the boat or we all may end up in the s**t & I for one will be very pissed off.
Stick with the status quo [time for a three bar guitar riff].

Derek.

c d and e  will cover status quo, whats all this about £100 per day to drive a van through town, 2 years ago they tried to get Manchester in the same boat, they built a motorway 10 mile radius and that was to be the toll radius for us poor folk up North, they put it to the vote and the common people told them where to stick their Idea, ever watched shameless on tv well thats living down our street, just call me Frank. I have no doubt that they will come back hard and pressure us into paying to go to work, buy clothing and visit historic places of the industrial revolution, King cotton and all that. But £100 to drive a van through Manchester when Exide batteries pump out so much pollution locally to provide the power to start the van in the first place, they can go swing on their own eye lashes,  Any how I have a 2 stroke scooter that pumps out smoke like a slow boat to China so that will be the transport of the future up here

Petrol engined vehicles are not charged under the Low Emmissions regulations only diesel engined vehicles.  If you have a large  petrol engine in your vehicle you will pay a higher rate of VED than one with a small engine.

Every licensed passenger vehicle used London now has to comply with Euro 4 and next year this will move to Euro 5 as do all licenced goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes or pay the LEZ penalty on a daily use basis.

There are no current plans at present to extend the conjestion zones although this may change after the next London Mayoral election  in 2012.

The projected emmissions increase from allowing Historic vehicles over 25 years old to use the LEZ is 0.1 of 0.1%.

Paying VED is somthing every motor vehicle user does and if you use your HV for daily use then VED should be paid at the usual rate too.  Only low mileage true HV's should be either exempt or pay a lesser rate.

As for ramps and pits, I have a 4 post lift made in 1952 ish, called a Laycock Coronation.
I bought it for £200 from a garage that was closing down, where it had been for almost 30 years.
Just moved it into new unit and set it up ready for a few more years service, pity we can't make things of this quality now !!.
I wouldn't be without it

I'm with Derek on this one, I own a 1970`s classic so yes its tax exempt its a 2300cc and if I had to pay tax on it I don't think I would keep it.
How many pre 1972 cars do you see on the road every day? not many, if they did change it how many cars 25 year old or more do you think you would see? I bet loads but then they would have a problem so yes it would be nice but can not see it ever happening and if it did I think it would come back and slap us. Me and my mates often talk about the what if and then what cars would we buy if it was done on a rolling 25 year.

Don't rock the boat
