In 1997 the incoming New Labour UK government decided to raise some more tax revenue by not allowing the "Tax Exempt - Classic Car" to roll forward.

Since then only owners of classics manufactured up to the end of 1972 have been able to tax their vehicles for £0.00 Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)

If the "rolling" of the exemption had continued, owners of vehicles registered between 1973 and 1986 would have been exempt of VED.

Someone has raised an "E-Petition" to request this be re-introduced.

The E-Petition needs at least 1,000 votes to be considered by the Government - how many classic car owners are there out there owning cars made in 1973 to 86?

You can vote here:
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/183

Please copy this and forward to as many people as you know who might be willing to help themselves or help others with the increasingly expensive business of keeping our motoring heritage on the road.

No it wasn't Tony, it was his sidekick who eventually became unelected PM.

The Story, (get a cuppa tea and slipoff your shoes, sit in a cumfy armchair)

Ken Clarke introduced the HV tax class with a rolling dateline set at 25 years.  The opposition, Mr Brown et all, were very vociferous but could not prevent Ken's law from getting the Royal monika and becomimg statute law.   Fast forward to 1997 and an electorial musical chairs happened leaving Mr Brown sitting at the money wheel.  Lots of things needed doing but Brown's very first action was to use a 'statuatory instrument' to shove his foot hard on the brake and end the rolling dateline.  Because of the royal monika Mr Brown couldnt end it all and had to leave things goimg but with a deadline of 31st December 1972 and thats where it's stayed ever since.

Some do say that Mr Brown was a very spiteful bad looser 'cos he couldn't get his own way before, but I couldn't possible comment  Wink

If you own a classic vehicle , often you insure it for a limited mileage, I insure my Talbot for no more than 3000 miles, and so if this was part of the deal, it would prove that many classic vehicle owners don't do much harm with such limited mileage per year.
If you agree to a low mileage per year, you should pay less.

Well put in a very understandable nutshell  Smiley

I to use 'Classic' insurance on all my HV's and make sure that I don't exceed the milage limit because it would invalidate the insurance.  Another part of this type of insurance is that it's only for S,D & P which means that unless a prior arrangement is made with the insurer the Classic/HV cannot be used to travel to and from work or for any other type of buisness use.
