What will a Romahome comfortably cruise at?

I've fitted electronic ignition, new plugs, distributor cap & rotor plus oil change. I've tried cruising on the flat my Carry at 60 mph, and things did get a bit hot, over halfway on the gauge. At 55 -58 mph it went down to just under half way. Even in a straight line, down hill, I found it took the detachment of test pilot not to be scared witless at 70 mph - once was enough. Hills are a major bind though, on the A303 at times I was down to 30 mph. any incline causes speed to fall off rapidly. Oh, just a wee bit more grunt would be fantastic.

On my trip from Oban to London I found my Bambi quite happy to chug along at 50 m.p.h and at this speed it had enough reserve power left to cope with hills providing there is some planning on the gas beforehand. I've since replaced the 23 year old oil filter, cambelt, air belt, air filter, coolant, checked the timings and completely changed the oil so fingers crossed it will do a bit better next time some serious travelling can happen. With modern semi-synthetic oils that are so much better than the oils 23 years ago, I'm quite optimistic the engine will last much longer than it would on the original mineral oil and 15w40 from 198x.

Depends how big the gradient is
Seriously, though over the recent 680 mile tour we did 55 mph seems to give the best compromise between having a bit in reserve, getting reasonanble mpg - about 33 - and getting there.
I'm learning to slow down and take life at a more leisurely pace in the Romahome,
Hope you're enjoying yours
Cheers

We did 850 miles round Scotland at the start of the month. I drive the Bambi on cruise control - in other words with the pedal flat to the floor. It struggles to get to 60mph but if the road is relatively flat once it gets there it will sit at 60 no problem.
We were using about £30 of fuel a day and probably weren't getting very good MPG due to my heavy foot

Thanks. Yes, the Supercarry would seem to top out around 65-70. 60 is pushing it hard, 55 mph is more comfortable on the 970cc lump and it will probably last longer too. A bigger factor is the handling. It's like trying to get a jelly to skateboard round an ice rink.

Bambi's are the slowest of the motorhomes, mine is best cruising around 50mph, fuel wise giving around 32 mpg if driven gently, getting into my van afterwards is great, it goes like a ferrari compared with bambi
