As you may have read before that i was having a spot of bother with the hard push on the go faster pedal and the  engine dasping like a 100 fags a day asthmatic!

Suggestions indicated a accelerator pump failure in carb. Refurb one purchased (thanks to Dell Boy and thanks also to Dell Boys cohort John for hints and tips to make said job easier).

Job took about an hour and a half (including fag break and tea) Fired up and idled fine progressive acceloration marvelous. After a nice warm up sharp press and the chain smoker was back. Hmmmmmm. Now at a bit of a loss.

Checked vacuum advance and retard seems ok no leaks from vacuum hoses

Me thinks have to go back to basics and it may be the plugs are shot (read this bit in a old book called the car doctor). Any other suggestions or confimation of the basics idea

Have you checked your fuel filter isn't blocked?  I had a similar problem and that was the culprit.

Hello Mike,
Bring it to the yard & we`ll have a look at it.
Sounds like its sucking crap into the carb or you have a fuel supply problem.

I think i may have a fuel pump problem. Reasons for this is changed the spark plugs and took her for a spin.

What a difference! I could stamp hard on the pedal and no hesitation what so ever. Was ok for about 5 miles then had the hesitation again. Got home and thought just check the timing and get the tick over back to standard as idling a little fast. Just as I hooked up the strobe it spluttered and died  and the fuel pump was marking a squealing noise rather than ticking.

Wondering if getting insufficient fuel through has been the main cause all along. What do you guys think?

Take the black cap off they tend to go rusty inside if they are not sealed properly

Definetly sounds like a pump problem. But trying to second guess what is wrong by descriptions is very difficult.

Finally getting time to play with the van. Ignition on (check) fuel pump ticking (check) van started ok. Hmm everything off. Under van to test fuel pump. Fuel lead to carb off, Container under hose. Ignition on and sputtering and spitting of fuel out of the pipe.  Then pump started a strange whirring noise. Pipe reattached. Tried ignition on again and pump still making whirring noise. Guess pump is shot

Not really..it could be pulling air in ...there is nothing in the pump to make a whirring noise..it either clicks slow or fast ..or does nothing....if you have took the pipe off...it should shoot out like a water pistol...they are a supprisingly good pump..check system for holes or clockages...and also check breather pipe is clear  should be able to blow in it..but not suck out...mine is a green plastic breather pipe...yours may be different being the van...good luck

How much fuel do you have in it?
Im asking because ive heard of disgruntled mechanics putting rags in fuel tanks and once the fuel gets low it covers the fuel outlet, then once fuel is added it floats back up. Personally id take the pump off, strip and see first.
