Hey guys,
Have any of you gone down the route of changing your fuel filters...or cleaning out old petrol tanks?
After doing all the normal maintenance bits on the engine, it drives normal... but has always run a little rough.
such as randomly missing beats at idle, and sometimes pulling in say first...losing power, then coming back.
I noticed that my fuel filter is FULL of junk, so will replace it next time I get under the van...
wondering if it is worth trying to take the fuel tank off the van too to flush that?
only other thing, any suggestions on how to fit a new filter? mainly in that the bracket is rust rotten and I just know when I replace it, it'll crumble....any suggestions for making a new holder?
Thanks again guys, Hope everyone is well.

yeah its an easy job to change it..just a couple of clips .but if your planning on flushing the tank then do the tank first and after while change the fuel filter...otherwise you are just gonna blog your new filter... the bracket if your unlucky may buckle and snap..if it does ..just use an old oversize jubilee clip..and put a couple of self tappers through the long tail that is sticking out... easy peasy ..good luck.....oh by the way ...when i changed mine it was full of shite...and i got all excited thinking it was gonna make a big difference....i dont want to piss on your fire...but it made no difference at all....LOL

I have never changed a fuel filter. I have had to clean the air intake to the petrol tank which when blocked causes the tank to vapour lock restricting the fuel flow. Also the float needle jet in the carb & air leaks in the fuel lines cause fuel starvation. Derek.

I my self am in the prosses of changing my filter (van not idling to well on petrol, spitting and spluttering)i replaced the original with a repco unit, replaced all the fuel lines that are rubber.instead of removing my tank i turned on the ignition and let the electric pump drain my tank into a tub(good weed killer),now i have removed the carby for a complete over haul.in the mean time i am studing my manual on carby bits...ken

Don't forget folks, our trucks are in the 20 year old region, that's a long time for sediment and rust to accumulate inside a metal tank with little access for ventilation.
There will inevitably be crap in there over this sort of period of time. Mine's a pick up and its really easy to remove the tank for flushing out, I'm not sure about the van one for ease of getting off?? Both of my pickups had a fair degree of crap in them, so I was very glad I've cleaned them out.
And yes, excellent weed killer & keeps the cats at bay too!

Im not sure if in the uk,you have acess to ethanol fuel ? but here in australia at the servo we have a choice of straight unleaded fuel or a blend of ethanol/unleaded fuel.the later is cheaper and made of prossesed sugar cain.on dismantling my carby i found small solid particals of rubber fuel line throughout.this is a know fact that ethanol based fuel and older cars dont mix, hence replacing all my fuel lines and carby rebuild and as titch sugested i will remove the tank and flush.hope this info helps others...ken

No, we don`t have such primitive fuel. We only have crappy old unleaded which eats fibreglass petrol tanks & the tank sealers people put in there tanks to seal leaks. All japanese vehicles were designed to run on unleaded from 1974 so rubber bits etc. should be compatible. Derek.
