Hi all,

Just wondering a couple of things. I bought a cheapo electronic ignition box off ebay, so while I was at it had a quick peak at the spark plugs for a check over, and they appeared fouled. I'm guessing the mixture has been too rich, this might also expain the lower then hoped fuel economy. So I then went back to the distrubutor, noticed a few odd wires, following the wires and found they connected onto an odd box sitting next to the coil! So I sanded the dirt off it and low and behold, I saw Lumenition on it! Supprise supprise! Wow!

However, since there is already a system installed, how different would it be to correct the ignition timings, any guesses?

Second question, do you think the system has been fitted right? On cold days I still have to go through the gas, clutch down and choke out proceedure for a bit. Is the electronic ignition supposed to somewhat eliminate all this?

Cheers

NO..the electronic ignition is just replacing the points....everything else remains the same....still have to use choke to fire her up

i have no idea what illuminated box you have fitted....my electronic ignition is inside the distributer ...

to check ignition timing you will need to use a strobe light ...on the timing marks..

i dont have a starting procedure of any fashion...just get in pull out choke turn key and  "SILVER AWAY"...easing it off steadily over the first few miles...

Have you still got points fitted? If so, strip out the Lumenition box & throw it away. There nothing but grief & a pointless [is this a pun] accessory fitted by owners who had problems & thought it would be the cure instead of sorting out the original ignition & setting it up to work correctly.
Points replacement electronic kits are worth fitting but these are not full electronic ignition. Full electronic does away with the advance/retard mechanical mechanism & replaces it with electronic wizardry.

I think your problems lie with your carb flooding.

Thanks for the replies all!

Derek,

Do you think it would be the needle valve or float that would be the culprit. As for the points themselves I'll have to check. I also had a very dirty air filter that smelt strongly of petrol fumes?

Cheers

It sounds very likely.
