Hi,

In the past couple of days my gearbox has been extremely stiff and sometimes refused to even go into gear. I figured it was the gearbox oil that needed topping up, yet I have no idea where to do so. I think I found where to put the oil in near the rear axle but I'm not quite sure. Does anyone have a picture? Tongue

Thanks in advance!

Are you sure that the gearbox oil level is too low? Does it leak oil?

The stiff gearbox might be caused by the clutch not fully disengaging.

Did the problem appear suddenly or develop over a few days?

I don't think it leaks which thinking about it would make it weird if it was low.

It suddenly happened two days ago and yesterday I took it out and it was even worse, just not going into some gears unless I really had to force it. I just had the clutch replaced about a month ago and it's been working fine. I really hope it's something simple, I love my van!

Buy a Haynes manual to see where the filler plug is. It is on the rear of the gearbox itself. 3/8" square socket drive fits it. Often extremely tight & its very easy to destroy the plug trying to get it out.
Three things could be causing your problem.
1. Clutch release bearing is jamming.
2. Cable abutment plate on side of gearbox has bent/broken.
3. One of the gear change cables is failing. This is the most likely cause.
These are much more likely than lack of oil causing stiffness.
Derek.

I will take my van into a friend who has fixed it before and see what he thinks. I hope it's something simple. Thanks for your help! Oh and I did find the oil replacement plug haha.

on the rear of the gearbox are two big unscrewable oil caps...the top one is obviously the filling one...and the correct level is about 5mm below the opening of the top filler hole...use a bent nail or an allen key to use as dip stick....but dont let it fall in..haha

Mine has a few times shown those same symtoms - very stiff gear changes.
Spraying a load of WD40 around linkages cured it.
May not be your problem - but always try simplest cure first!

I wish it was as simple as that, but my pressure plate has gone in my clutch. So now I have to buy an entirely new clutch as they don't sell the parts seperately anywhere. It's weird, I got a new clutch in their about 3 months ago. Embarrassed

How do you know the pressure plate has gone?

Took it to the guy who fixes my van and has replaced my clutch before and he instantly thought it was that and it was. Got one out of an old Rascal and I'm finally back to driving my van. Smiley
