Chop bless you... now 15 years ago, if I broke down and pulled over, I barely had the bonnet up when at least one... sometimes two cars would pull up with guys asking if I needed help.... These days, unfortunately, I could be in the central reservation with my knickers round my ankles and they wouldn't even look sideways.... so chest out is certainly not gonna do me any favours Grin
I might ask the nice guy at the little Aauto shop round the road if he could have a look.
I am boycotting Halfords.... I went in a few weeks ago to ask about a stereo, and the rather rotund, spotty teenage halfwit was quite rude and had a bad attitude.... not one penny of mine will they ever see.

>>JUST ASK<<

aww jen ...dont be so "unflattering" about yourself...i think i would notice if you were in the middle of the road with ya knickers around your ankles...as im sure most of the guys on here would...we were all fit and young 15++ years ago....but fortunatly ..as women get older and not so good looking ...our eysight gets poorer..so it sort of balences out a bit....

poor old jen ..the mother hen
shes having trouble yet again
first the pump ,thats like a heart
then her battery, flat as a fart

whats next. we all ask it
could be coil or maybe gasket
but come what may, i have to say
we will assist in every way

so if your van ..starts falling to bits
just drop yer knickers
and show us your tits

Hello Jen, I have plenty of alternators because they very, very rarely fail. I think it is either your battery or starter motor. It`s a pity you charged it so cannot do a recovery test today on the battery. If you take it to any battery supplier i.e. tyre firms, car accessory shops ect. they will test it. Your best bet is an auto electrician to test your electrical system. I still feel the battery has died from old age. Have you been topping it up with distilled water or is it a  sealed for life battery? Derek.

Got up this morning and re fitted the battery.... It had 10-11 hours of charging up, so I tried to start and the bloody thing wouldn't even turn over once. Just a faint click and nothing more. So I got a lift round the shop and bought a new battery... £56.. bugger bugger bugger... but once in, the van started lovely.
Now I just have to wait a while to see if this one drains. I reckon if it's going to, I will know this week.

Chop you're a honey
Your poem was funny....

I had a drain on my battery......isolator switch installed problem gone hehehheheheh

Isolator switch is where you can "switch off the battery and involves the big red battery lead gong to a switch (capable of handling the capacity of the battery) then another big red lead going from this switch back to the starter motor.

So far so good Derek.... Put the new one on last Saturday morn, and everything "seems" to be ok. I am sure that it would have drained by now if there was something really wrong, but I will feel a lot more sure about it next week if all is ok then. Must have just been time for the battery to give up the ghost.
I do love my little van when it isn't poorly. Smiley

Sounds like the battery was near it's end then Jen, the new one will give it a 'spark'!
isolator switches are a good idea though too, as mentioned earlier.
Good for battery draining safety, fire risk and to a fair degree security too!

lad it's OK,

Hi
I am an electrician and you may like a few ideas with regard to your problem. Derek was right in asking you to disconnect the battery (but do not charge it).Further to other answers the causes could be-

      1. alternator diode leakage - to determine disconnect battery and put a multimeter on dc current range between the post and disconnected terminal - this should read zero if it reads anything like an amp or two that is your problem and the alternator needs rebuilding or replacement. If no multimeter try disconnecting the terminal in subdued light and looking for an arc - there will not be an arc if no load is being drawn - if nothing is turned on or faulty there wont be.
      2. Battery ok and starter suspected - starter may not be getting battery voltage at main terminal -check  engine earth lead for clean tight connection otherwise the (rubber mounted ) engine may be trying to earth itself up the choke cable - I have seen fires started with this.If ok give the starter a tap with a small hammer while cranking ,if motor speeds up the brushes are suspect ,you are causing them to reseat with your (light)tapping all the best tinworm

Ha - just seen the second page ! hope everything is ok now .If you fit a new battery bear in mind it may sustain a small alternator leakage for longer and still go flat over a longer period....

Thanks Tinworm, I think that if I get to the end of next week and the battery is still going ok, then that will be the end of it. If it does drain, then I will go through and try all the other things that have been suggested. Smiley
