I drove around all day yesterday, here there and everywhere.... not in the evening, so I didn't need my lights on. Went out to the van today, and the battery died when I tried to start the van. I mean it did three laboured turnovers.... then nothing. Now I will have to take off the battery and charge it up, but why would it just do that? I had not left the lights on, have no stereo to run it down, no interior light on... I just don't get it. Does anyone know???

Right... I have got to the bottom of my little mystery. On Friday night, I loaned the van to my other half and his drummer. They went out, played a gig, then had to load up the van.... in the dark.... so "they" ( I think my old man was using the royal "they" ) put the back interior light on.... and on it stayed until the battery died sometime this morning. So no gremlins.... apart from the one that has blighted my life these past 20 years...

However.... if you'd been using it since, you should have put charge back into the battery, Keep an eye on it Jenxy....

Yeah Titch, I have been putting charge back into it, BUT, the silly Twonk did not turn it off.... so me driving for twenty minutes, was undone by the stupid unit being left on for four days... I might have been topping it up, but then it was draining like crazy overnight... He doesn't drive himself.... and I trust him with nothing mechanical, electrical, digital or financial..... I do trust him with .... crayons!

As a rider, not particularly about batteries, I came across a neat little device the other day in my motor factors, I think it's made by Draper, about £15, it's a trickle charger and it charges the battery without needing to take it off the vehicle. It's great I make sure I have 12.8v ish when going on a long run.

I saw one of those in the Maplins store today... little dinky solar panel... I think they are great, but would probably only work for six weeks of the year in our climate.

I was thinking that a bit too, I mean if it was the splinter that thankfully killed it, Leave it there anyway!

Hi Jen, Over to the left is off. Either your starter motor has gone "open circuit" & is draining the battery OR, the battery is kaput & needs replacing. Dis connect your battery red lead & leave it off all night. If you reconnect in the morning & the battery turns the engine over the battery is probably O.K. If it is still virtually dead then you need a new battery. Report back. Derek.

Starter motor... ? I hadn't even thought of that. I was thinking, new battery in the morning from auto shop, so old one is sat on the kitchen table charging up enough to hopefully get me to auto shop and back. Then I am thinking if problem persists.... new alternator from ebay and a trip up the workshop. I have bought a manual off ebay... still waiting for it to arrive, so will look up this "starter motor " thingy but if it has done what you say it might have.... what does thaqt mean..... in terms of money and damage??

jenxy ...if you get to halfords they will test the battery for you......(if there not busy)..do the old chest out blinking eye thing ...
Dont just assume its the alternator..(even though it is a possibility).check all cables where there could be rubbing on bodywork ..it could be shorting out somewhere...check your interior light switches in door reveals....maybe door not shutting enough to operate switch.....it will be quite expensive for a new alternator.....having a run of bad luck with the old lass...problems come in 3s so get ready for the cam belt snapping or the head gasket blowing...lol....only joking ....wish you well...good luck...
