Yup, I know i have been away a while..... I see the board is thriving and lots of new people... all good.
Ok, can I fit a tow bar on my wee van, and if so, what load can it realistically pull???
Hi Chop, Titch, Van , JJ, Del and all.... Hope you are all good. Smiley

I know, I mustn't leave it so long. Thanks jj, but Teaspoon, I am not sure I know what you mean about the one that fits on corners, I wonder if Derek has one. I don't want to pull lots, maybe a trailer tent, or small trailer, tho I don't know if anyone has tried to tow anything with their van. If anyone has, let me know how it went. Smiley

Hello Jen,
Hope all is well with you & your family.
Yes, you can fit a tow bar & I have fitted quite a few. See Rod`s pickup in Project Diaries. I dont have one in stock at present.
Try your local tow bar firm but get a firm quote before going ahead.
I think tow no more tha 400 kilos in total, trailer weight plus load.
Run the trailer tyres at around 15 p.s.i.
Best wishes,
Derek.

Hi Dell

Why would the trailer tyre pressures be so low when being towed please

Hello Claire,
If, with a light trailer, you pump the tyres up to say, 28 pounds, the hard tyres will bounce when you hit a bump & sometimes bounce from wheel to wheel in an oscillating motion & at its worse the trailer will break away.
I used to tow a trailer behind a solo motorcycle & this happened to me on the M.4. at 60 m.p.h. causing the bike to go into a weave & what is known as a "tank slapper". I fought the bike to a standstill as I couldn`t crash or bail out as I had my son on the back who was only 8 years old at the time.
When I finally stopped the M.4. was empty behind me where the traffic had pulled back as this adventure unfolded & I weaved all over the motorway for 3 or 4 minutes.
My two mates were behind me & had a grandstand view of the proceedings.
They said one wheel hit a bump & bounced in the air then when that one landed the other one bounced & it steadily got worse until it was bouncing from wheel to wheel about 18" off the ground.
When I got home I phoned the manufacturer of the trailer & he asked what tyre pressures I was running. I replied, 28 pounds & he said that is why it happened. I should of had them at halve that.
Ran it at 14 pounds after that & had no further problems & have towed with the solo bike up to ninety
very comfortably.

I had no idea about that, it's been a long time since I've towed a caravan although never had a problem.

It would also explain why I've had big cars etc pass me on the M.Way well over 60 with a little 5cwt trailer in tow and running steady.

You're never to old to learn  Smiley

The only problem is forgetting your towing when cutting through traffic. Have bounced it off central reservations a couple of times & braking distances are increased by about 10% so you have to keep that in mind & allow extra stopping distance. Otherwise its no different to normal riding.

Hi Jen,...Good to see you on here again, ( See??, blimey I must be clever!)

If you want a tow bar, I'd look on flea Bay, no manufacturers seem to hold them nowadays, I looked a couple of years ago but to no joy.
The pick up tow bars are far easier to fit than the van ones, but yes, towing a small trailer behind your van is feasable, what have you in mind..??

Your tyre pressures on the trailer will relate to it's own weight, a bit of experimenting really, but if you put any fair weight in it, adjust the pressures slightly.

There isn't much I haven't towed, legal & illegal, and I enjoy it. Your only 'be awares' are allowing for the extra length whilst turning, braking if it's got a bit of weight in it and slower acceleration, not forgetting too, that when you pull out of a junction, there's that bit behind you!

My pick up is in for a test soon, loads to weigh in, but if it moves forwards, with me, it goes to it's destination!!
