Unfortunately I do not have any spare bits here myself apart from half a wheel calliper.

I would advise him to take at minimum:

  • Four spare wheels/tyres
  • Oil
  • Spark-Plugs
  • Coil
  • Fanbelt
  • Basic tool kit that can change plugs, oil and make general repairs. Small set of spanners size 6-14 will do most bolts on our vans.

Hello one and all!

I've been trawling through this site for weeks reading up about Rascals but hadn't registered, so here we are.

As JJ has already said, me and a pal are off to Ulanbaatar, Mongolia in July. We were looking for a vehical that was a little out of the ordinary, simple to run and maintain (the cars are all donated and left in Mongolia), and would be relatively cheap to prep. Our Supercarry came up on ebay in October and we just couldn't say no. I know similar things have been achieved in Rascals before but I like to think ours is a little bit special Wink

The first £500 of fund raising and the car will be given to CNCF with the remainder (we're aiming for £2K) to Cancer Research UK.

For all the info, plus pics of the car, progress etc etc check out our new website:

www.LCDCrally.co.uk

We are not looking to turn this into a rally weapon, better to get it mechanically sound and serviced!

Massive thanks to JJ so far for kindly donating a set of wheels, we already have a tyre firm fitting them with some rallycross tyres and tubes.

I think there is a pretty comprehensive list on the website of parts/spares etc. that were after at the moment, so without wanting to duplicate too much, the following parts we will be replacing before we leave:

Standard service items
Full set of ignition components - minus the dizzy and coil
Battery
Timing belt/waterpump
Clutch - already sourced
Suspension bushes
Dampers
Track rod ends
Windscreen - ours has a crack
Reinforced strut tops at the front
A little bit of welding on one front arch

We have a bearing supplier on board and have already popped the front hubs as its an easy job but can anyone tell me the size of the rears? We need to keep the car rolling at the moment so if I can spec the bearings and get them in advance it would save hassle.

One point I'd like to hear your thoughts on is the gearbox. It is slightly noisy running in neutral and shuts up with the clutch depressed, is this cause for alarm or a trait of the 5 speed's? We'll be having to drop the box when we do the clutch and was wondering if it warrants further investigation.

Already mentioned is the cooling system. I'm not sure how capable the stock setup is but ours runs pretty warm on the motorway. Of course some of this is likely due to weight and aerodynamics, and the coolant system will be getting flushed, new thermostat and electric fan. I'm hoping that and an engine tune should level out the temperature

Any help is greatly appreciated, we are obviously new to these so are on a learning curve!

If you have a club sticker we'd be happy to throw a few on!

Fuel pump added to the list of parts to check over!

I admire your optimism chop and perhaps if i'd owned the car a while i could justify it! But its 25 years old, 90,000 miles and no real service history.....

Looks like titch is kindly offered to sort us out with some stickers, thankyou!

Hi, from what I have experienced some noise from the gearbox is normal compared to with the clutch in.

With my van it used to do it with my old gearbox, and now the same with a reconditioned one I had fitted a while back as part of some major repair work.

We only intent to take a handful of spares with us, most of the work we will be doing beforehand.

I'll change the 'box oil as part of the service and see where that gets us, but that is reassuring to hear!

A nice big set of spots arrived today, hope the alternator can take it what with that, a small inverter and stereo! Mind you JJ must have at least one big amp in the back of his to run two 12's and i guess that copes.
