300 BHP , 12 Injectors and faster than Subaru's

« on: February 05, 2011, 11:10:27 PM »

My son has tried to get car insurance at a realistic price for a few months now  ....  just about everycar car you would consider a safe bet is not a cheap or realistic option ....  as a student he was getting quotes of 3000 to 6000 thousand pounds on everyday runabouts  .....
So i have spent the day on the phone calling a few companies to see if I can find something that is realistically affordable .
I-Kube, supposed to be student friendly, with restrictions on driving hours and a tracker installed to analyse your driving actually came out the most expensive at a little over £6000.
So now frustrated with unrealistic replies and after speaking for hours with some insurance telephone sales operators, I asked a young insurance telesales operator if any vehicle was actually affordable...

The reply was VW Beetle 1200cc and some 1980's Minis.... everything else is priced out of the average young drivers reach. The policy does have a 5000 mile limit and on the condition of a PassPlus certificate.

The quote was £1400. Less than half , but still a huge amount for 5000 miles and a 17 year old student...

Also note, if your part time job is bar work or late night working, the premium could double !!!!
Also note, if your car has a low value  ( less than £1200 ) you could have a high loading on your premium due to the number of peeps buying up cheap cars , insuring them , then ramming their mate in an expensive car and claiming LOADSA money....

I think young drivers have priced themselves off the road due to disastrous driving.
Forty years ago you learnt roadcraft on a motorcycle & had your mistakes on that which generally didn`t hurt anyone else & could be repaired with a club hammer at little cost.
Now at 17 it`s a small cheap car crammed full of your mates,Red Bull, vodka & a spliff & lets aim for the nearest tree & see how many mates I can kill.
Sadly this is what happened to my neighbours son aged 21 10 years ago when his mate crashed at high speed on the old Rettendon Turnpike & he was thrown out of the back seat. Wasn`t wearing a seat belt.
My own son was a lunatic in cars & on motorbikes & had countless accidents. Occasionally I pointed out to him that they weren`t accidents, they were mistakes. He made one mistake too many & at the age of 26, 3 years ago lost his life when taking one of my bikes for an m.o.t. test.
My other neighbour lost his son at the age of 21 when leaveing a local pub after having a good drink. He was run over by Matt Monroe, the singer, in his Rolls Royce. No fault was attributed to Mr Monroe.
So, out of my 5 immediate neighbours 3 of us have lost our only sons in their 20`s to road traffic accidents.
This is why insurance is so expensive for young people because they are high risk.
My own,Traders insurance, went up 30% this year to £903.00 & I have never had a claim against me in 44 years driving bikes & cars.

sorry i have to disagree with that my daughter did a project on this for her collage project and
interview a wide range of people including the police and found the young drivers no real different
to any other,  probably worst drivers   BMW,white van man, taxis, and some of the older
generation who have never past a test. yes we all see the TV  the young driving high on
drugs and the tragic loss of live but i expect the people driving the car hasn't got insurance let alone
a licence and has probably stolen the car, we never had to pay such a high price for our insurance
so why should thay. when you think of the amount of cars on the road and the amount  insurance
company's must be making ? my daughter has now had two cars written off one buy a taxi driver
and one buy a oap ,

having driven approx 120000 + miles a year for about 20+ years in a truck UK+Europe in theory i have over 200 years experience compared to the average driver who does 10000 miles a year, still had a prang.the main problem everyone is in a rush .young/old/male/female no set pattern just luck of the draw sometimes and to many distractions

every loss is hard to bear. friend ,brother sister mum dad . i`ve lost too many... but lets not forget that because there are so many chancers out there not paying there dues we have to pay over the odds for our insurance. our mission should be as an enthusiasts club to get an insurance compnay on board . negotiate a deal ... what do you think? its worth a try

I think back to what i paid as a teenage driver, about £130 third party only on a 2CV6!
Now a teenage boy needs to pay £3000 to insure a 1.0 metro!!
I saw on tv that teenage girls pay a fair bit less to insure thier cars Huh
No wonder there are so many uninsured drivers on the road these days, the fine is way less than the insurance!
Being an old fart my insurance is quite cheap, but goes up every year even though i have added another year to my no claims bonus Roll Eyes
I am dreading the renewals this year...
