Hiya.

Going to be doing the valve stem oil seals and just wanted to ask if its a fairly easy job (the kind of job i can do in an afternoon) and do any of you guys have any tips in doing them? My dad is starting to complain about me filling the garage with smoke every morning!

I've done old mini heads in the past and I'm guessing the rascal ones are the same idea as them? I've got a spring compressor and a torque wrench but are there any other special tools i need?

i would think if your familiar with a spanner and know what your doing ...then its quite possible to do it in a day.....if you have dont it on a mini then it should be very similar to that ...just alot more awkward working in the cab rather than under the bonnet....

 its quite possible to do without removing the head...but i dont fancy it..
..lower piston fill chamber with string then wind piston upwards to compress string against underside of the valve ...its possible...Huh??

Its quite a lot more complex than a mini because it is overhead cam.
All the timing gear has to come out & the rockers & the spindles they pivot on.
You may need a different type of spring compressor to the one you used on a mini engine.
Knock the valve stem seals down to locate them with a deep 10m.m. socket or equivalent or they can come loose.
Change the timing belt whilst your in there if you do not know when it was last changed if ever.

That's brilliant guys, thanks for the advice. If i can get my hands on a head set then i will give it a go at the weekend.

I've heard of people doing the "string in cylinder" method before, but knowing my luck it wouldn't work and the head would have to come off anyway. Also will put my mind at ease knowing the head gasket has been done at the same time.

I think to be on the safe side I'll put my MG battery on charge and bring it out of winter storage early just in case things don't go to plan, being car-less isn't really an option living in the middle of nowhere...

I've already changed the timing belt and pulley and apart from regrinding the valves, is there anything else that's worth while doing when the heads off?

Andy, if you can get a head, which is what I did, have it pressure checked & skimmed as well.. just to be safe. I paid £100.00 to have mine rebuilt and it literally was like new!

In fact, they have a spare head...but..cost and the shipping to you could add up a bit, I could ask if you like??

BUT, if you tell me the MG is B V8, I will get real jealous plus the fact that you live in a fantastic part of our island...even more jealous.....

mmm MG's I could tell you about, quite an exclusive rare Midget....

Cheers Titch, but to be honest, i cant really afford spending more than i need to at the moment.

The MG is a 1975 B-GT just with the 1800cc. It was my last restoration project that i finished in August last year. Might be for sale soon if anyones interested? I feel that i should have a modern car as a back up. My dad has an MG Midget that he bought brand new in 1964 (its lucky to do about 100 miles between MOTs these days).

My brother used to have an MG MIDGET...with a removeble blue tinted glass roof...awsome little car...

Friend of mine owns an ( M or N ? ) reg Midget with a 3.5 V8 in it, now then, anyone that knows their stuff, will be curious to that..............

I have driven it and I will drive it again...and if I won the lottery I would like to own it.....that should tell you something!

Absolutely, outstanding, beautifully sounding, extremely special...built by Rover themselves!!!

How many of ya have seen one of these.......think about it.....
