Shock Absorbers

I used to have a book that cross referenced all manufacturers going back to the 70's, can I find it?? Pah!!
So, where can I get the relevant shocks, front and rear, who knows what'll fit our vans & pick ups.
I see no point in buying 20 year old second hand ones, no matter how well they clean up, they are still 20 years old.
I also see no point in paying stupid crazy prices like some folk want for 'new' ones.
They ain't heavy duty, they don't require great load pressures and they ain't very long, so who has them and how much??
There has to be a way to compare the way they operate, i.e. oils/lengths & fittings, anyone had experience in this department??
Thanks,
Titch
